We knew it was coming but that didn't mean it hurt any less watching Zoey Jane Levy lose her father Peter Gallagher in the season 1 finale of Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist. All season long, Zoey and her family have been preparing to say goodbye to Mitch after his Progressive Supranuclear Palsy illness got worse. And after she saw herself sing "Bad Moon Rising" in the mirror, Zoey had a feeling something bad was going to happen. Her fears came true when Mitch took his last breath and died surrounded by his family. Zoey had one last vision of her father, dancing together as he passed away. It was beautiful, it was moving, and it was downright heartbreaking. The finale continued with Mitch's funeral and ended as everyone left. The Clarke family sat with each other in silence as Mitch's spot on the couch remained empty, and Zoey started to cry. Below, EW got Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist creator Austin Winsberg — who based the series, and this episode in particular, on his own life and experience losing his father to PSP — to break down that emotional finale, tease where the series will go in season 2 if it gets renewed, and more. One of the ideas going forward in season 2 is how does a family move on after death and how does the family move on after tragedy and what are the ways in which we try to rebound and bounce back?

Will Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist return for season 2, and if so, what will the show's story be about? Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist premiered in January and wrapped its episode first season in May. In Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist , brilliant computer programmer Zoey Clarke Jane Levy somehow gained the power to hear other people's innermost feelings and desires — but performed through pop songs and dance numbers that only she can see and hear. Zoey described her ability as " X-Men meets The Voice " and, thanks to her genderfluid next-door neighbor Mo Alex Newell , Zoey realized that her mission is to figure out why each person is singing a "heart song" and how she can help them with their issues. However, no one was more important to Zoey than her father Mitch Peter Gallagher , who was dying of Progressive Supranuclear Palsy throughout the season. Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist season 1 brought Mitch's story to its tragic but inevitable conclusion, but left the door wide open for Zoey's journey of heart songs to continue. However, with productions halted due to the coronavirus pandemic, it's not clear what direction NBC will take in terms of its multiple live-action series and Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist has its own production challenges since it shoots in Vancouver which doubles for San Francisco. So, Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist is currently stuck in a holding pattern waiting for word on a renewal. Encouragingly, Winsberg cited that there is "so much love" from the President of NBC and other executives at the network for Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist so he's "cautiously optimistic" that season 2 will happen.
